PSLE to be Scrapped?

On Tuesday, 18 September 2012, there was an article on TODAY regarding whether PSLE should be scrapped.

It was reported that Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MP Hri Kumar agrees that PSLE should be scrapped. However, a way to decide which secondary school each student should enter has to be agreed on before the abolishment.

Views of Other Observers and Educators

There will always be an informal ranking of schools based on the PSLE cut-off points for entry to the various secondary schools. Paulin Straughan Associate Professor
The exam is some form of assessment to pit the education standards of children here against those in other countries and the situation should not become one such that children abate their learning until Primary 6. Mrs Jenny YeoPrincipal of South View Primary School
The format of the PSLE could be tweaked by having a certain percentage of the PSLE score weighted by national assessments and also non-academic aspects such as national education or community service Low Yen LingChua Chu Kang GRC MP
Hri Kumar says he would support ceasing exam as long as alternative can be agreed on.

My Personal View

I believed that scores and grades are not everything. It is an advantage to have good grades. However, the important thing is the development of skills and the process of working your way there.

Personally, I excelled through my primary school education and did fairly well during my secondary school education. English was my poorest subject during that period of time and I was forced to have tuition for English. It became a chore and I was quite unhappy about it back then.

I can't imagine the amount of stress children nowadays are facing - having so much homework and yet forced to have addition tuitions, ballet lessons, piano lessons etc.

I feel that Singapore's Education System is too result/examination oriented. This makes life a bit too competitive and given the "kiasu" behavior of Singaporeans, wants to strive for the best in every single aspect.

In conclusion, A change will always have its advantages and disadvantages. There is no perfect solution that works 100% well. It is a matter of what to give and what to take.

Like what Hri Kumar had mentioned, the alternatives have to be agreed on before the PSLE can be scrapped. Thus, I foresee that there will not be major changes in the short run.
