In general, the jQuery grabs the height of the window and the footer. Every time you scroll the page, it checks if the scrolling has exceed the height of the sidebar and the scrolling has not reach the footer. If so, it fixed the sidebar using CSS and revert it otherwise.
techbrij.com did a great job explaining in much more detail, the HTML, CSS and jQuery used.Anyway, its a shame I can't get that to work with the Blogger's sidebar!
